- Infrastructure is destiny. Uruk’s canals, Rome’s aqueducts, London’s sewers — cities that invest in their bones survive; those that neglect them, crumble.
- Diversity drives dynamism. Chang’an, Baghdad, and modern New York all thrived when outsiders were welcome, and stagnated when the doors closed.
- Inequality is the recurring fault line. From Roman insulae to today’s informal settlements, the gap between a city’s richest and poorest residents has always been its greatest source of instability.
- Cities that adapt, endure. Angkor emptied when its water systems failed; Detroit reinvented itself after collapse. Flexibility, not size, determines survival.
