That changed in the second millennium BCE, when Semitic-speaking workers in and around Egypt simplified hieroglyphic signs into symbols representing single sounds. By about 1050 BCE, the Phoenicians had refined this into a lean, 22-sign alphabet.
The consequences were enormous. A trader could learn the alphabet in weeks rather than years. The Greeks borrowed it, added vowels, and produced the literature, philosophy, and drama that still anchor Western thought.
